The National Cancer Data Framework (Data Framework) aims to ensure Australia has a mature cancer data ecosystem that supports reporting and benchmarking of key cancer control performance indicators, embeds Indigenous Data Sovereignty, underpins data-driven improvements to patient care and supports world-class research.

The Data Framework was developed by Cancer Australia in partnership with Cancer Council Australia and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Following its launch in November 2025, Cancer Australia is preparing the companion implementation plan for consultation and sector release.

Cancer Australia is sharing the draft implementation plan to support coordinated, whole-of-sector delivery of the Data Framework. The implementation plan is designed to track progress, support collaboration and help prioritise next steps to meet the Data Framework’s objectives.

Implementation of the Data Framework is a shared responsibility across jurisdictions and the health and cancer sector. Cancer Australia will take a national coordination role, working in close collaboration with the sector.

Cancer data is critical to:

  • drive optimal cancer care and a high performing cancer care system

  • inform planning, delivery and continuous improvement of cancer care

  • inform policy and research priorities across the cancer control continuum to improve cancer outcomes
